THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS & FROM BEYOND

HP Lovecraft was one of American horror fiction’s greatest visionaries.  His unique mixture of invented mythology, gothic horror, and science fiction, has long been a challenge to filmmakers. We are delighted to be presenting two of the more imaginative interpretations of his work…

THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS (2012): A series of floods in rural Vermont uncovers the bodies of grotesque creatures that seem to match descriptions given in certain local myths and legends. Miskatonic University Folklorist Albert Wilmarth goes to investigate further, and uncovers a conspiracy that extends out into the furthest reaches of space and down into the darkest pits of hell. Featuring Native American folklore, brain transplants, unspeakable cults, and aliens from Pluto, this is a real labour of love by the HP Lovecraft Historical Society. Shot to look like a 1930s RKO horror movie, in elegant B&W, with stylised performances, and elegantly retro production, it will appeal to Lovecraft fans, film fans, and anyone looking for something a little… unusual. THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS will be released in the UK later this year by Grimm entertainment.

FROM BEYOND  (1986 – Remastered in HD): Scientists experimenting with the pineal gland to stimulate a Sixth Sense discover that by doing so, they are able to perceive hostile creatures existing in a dimension parallel to ours.Even worse, the creatures can now see them. Following on from their outrageous, splattery, blackly comic take on Lovecraft’s novella HERBERT WEST: REANIMATOR, Director Stuart Gordon and Writer-Producer Brian Yuzna reunited with stars Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton for this equally garish and gruesome, but rather lesser known follow-up. FROM BEYOND will be available in HD remastered format from March 2013, courtesy of Secondsight films.

Tickets available HERE.

From Beyond 1986

Dir. Stuart Gordon – Prod. Brian Yuzna  – 86 Minutes  – 18 Cert  –  Region 2

From Beyond is the 1986 release Directed by Stuart Gordon and Produced by Brian Yuzna. Based on the short story by H P Lovecraft it stars Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton who are re-united from Gordon’s previous film , another Lovecraft adaptation Re-Animator.

The story is that Dr Edward Pretorius (Ted Sorel) , who is a sexual deviant and a genius is attempting to discover the secrets of the pineal gland (or third eye). He creates a resonator and opens a world of horror which initially kills him and leaves his student Crawford Tillinghast (Combs) incarcerated in a metal institution .

Dr Katherine McMichaels (Crampton) is a pioneering psychiatrist and decides to return Tillinghast to the scene of the experiment so she can study him as he re-creates the experiment. And then all hell breaks loose in a wonderful adaptation.

This is now being released in the UK courtesy of Second Sight Films in a wonderful BluRay presentation. The colours are stark and vivid and look really fresh here and wonderfully lavish.

But what makes this release so fantastic are the stunning extras featured here. It is chock full of interviews with Gordon , Crampton and Dennis Paoli (screenplay). Also full commentary from Gordon, Yuzna & Combs as well as a great FX piece and much more.

From the team that brought you the gloriously perverse Re-Animator comes the equally
surreal horror classic From Beyond, which makes its long-awaited debut on Blu-ray thanks to
Second Sight Films.
Based on another H.P. Lovecraft adaptation this deranged gorefest is directed by Stuart
Gordon (Stuck) and produced by horror supremo Brian Yuzna (Society). It comes to Blu-ray
in stunning limited edition packaging, along with a DVD release on 25 February 2013.
An obsessive scientist Dr. Pretorius (Ted Sorel) and his assistant (Jeffrey Combs) have
invented ‘The Resonator’, a device designed to stimulate the brain’s pineal gland and expand
the powers of the mind. The machine gives them more than they bargained for however when
a parallel universe inhabited by slimy creatures ready to prey on humans reveals itself.
Pretorious meets a sticky end, returns as a grotesque, deformed being and all manner of
depravity ensues.
